autumn palimpsest

why do you keep re-writing
the faces of what has already been,
layer upon layer of feverish scribble?
the past cannot be altered,
the stranger said, his amber voice
stern.

i stood there broken,
the quiet of the dead for my only flame.
oh if the sky could know of the loneliness
of its blue.

outside, the tree was gently falling
into autumn, unaware that it did so,
and why.

and how hard i wished for the time of the tree,
how hard.

  5. a rabbi said: no heart is as whole as a broken heart.

lovely words, roxana. wonder what an amber voice sounds like? does it come before a green one?

  6. Memories succumb to decay like felled trees in charnel crypts, yet the sapling is inexorably nourished, born of imprints of the past. You write so beautifully, my dearest. You touch me profoundly.

  8. yes - something to wish for indeed, that time of the tree ... the tree who can gently fall into autumn (without pondering & wondering) --- lovely poem to welcome autumn

  9. Here: Outside, the summer is falling not so gently into autumn. Perhaps the stranger's amber voice will incite a small flame and convince it to burn awhile longer; at least until the trees begin to lose their memories. Meanwhile, the sky weeps in remembrance of the sun while inside the house we peel brown-spotted green apples gathered from an abandonned tree.

  11. Yesterday's twighlight, August
    almost over, lasted, slowly changing,
    until daybreak. Human sounds
    were shut behind curtains.
No human saw the night in this garden,
    sliding blue into morning.
    Only the sightless trees,
    without braincells, lived it
    and wholly knew it.

  14. There will be thousands of posts about autumn in the blogosphere, but none as profound and beautiful as this one. I have to say this once more: Profound.

  16. An excellent poem. You capture the emotive content without lapse into sentimentality. It is a gift.
"Loneliness of its blue" is a beautiful line.
Your poems have their rage balanced finely with sophisticated melancholy.

    A great poem!!!

It is the psychical scaffolding that is restructured and not the past but then the past only exists as a reflection of the mind moved by subterranean forces of time immemorial....

merci quelle magnifique expérience d'écrire ici...
