this sullen spring

i walk under the trees of spring
looking for you.
my shadow grows thinner.
suddenly, i can't call the shadow
shadow any longer
i can't call the evening evening.
oh, may that not happen with you, too
- i know it does, already -
i turn around and i see myself over there
running in circles
cutting the air with pale little arms,
while i thought myself here,
both feet firmly plunged
into this sullen spring.

  1. Sullen & Spring side by side should make an oxymoron, I hope this is purely poetry and not an inner reflection of something darker; but then who does not live without some part of shadows these days ?

May the rest of your Spring slip into joyfulness, before we pass into what may be a long, dry, hot, summer.

Oh, and the photos are simply lovely, as only you can make them.
    Be well Roxana

  4. hello my beautiful friend Roxana, thankyou for your beautiful comment- yes I was mesmerized by the blue butterfly so much so that I didn't think to consider the verse.I was quite overwhelmed with the beauty and then I did return to the bridge as an afterthought. Actually this butterfly has been haunting me in my waking dreams.I am getting ready to write another children's novel and this butterfly has come on and off the character list that I am drawing up!I'm sure I will decide to use it in the final take!
thankyou my friend for your inspiration!
sending you a stream of butterfly kisses.

  5. oh beautiful Roxana, these photos are soooooooooooooooooo beautiful, they are so extravagantly beautiful you have used the extravagant beauty of spring to display the darkness of the human heart what an extravagantly beautiful feat.

This poem may be about an aching relationship, but also this poem is about the natural aspects of spring, the waves of nightime cover the spring day where shadows and identity disolves.
I was walking with a friend this early spring evening by the urban valley and I found the white blossoms on the slopes of the valley and the mind were so beautiful as darkness fell.......

sending you white blossomed kisses, no not the snow blossoms of former times here at the bridge....haha
    thankyou

  8. sullen is just the right word... and there's a bit of relief, in having the right word.

  9. Even childhood had its pain and darkness; and within the promise of spring, the inevitable winter awaits.

  12. dearest, this is so beautiful (words and images).

... and on second viewing, images and words.

On the hundredth painstaking perusal, i become redundant (alliteratively), semantically and physically, for i see rare beauty (no words or images). Oh, dearest... i can call beauty beauty.

  13. Owen, some think that exactly such oxymorons lie at the heart of poetry :-) ah those Romanticists! thank you for your wishes, dear friend, for now that dry and hot summer is just a ghost, we have rain here every day.

thank you, Adelino, today i read these lines and thought of you and your blue colours:
"But Spring isn’t even a thing:
    It’s a manner of speaking.
Not even the flowers or green leaves return.
There are new flowers, new green leaves.
    There are new balmy days.
Nothing returns, nothing repeats, because everything is real." (Pessoa)

    anon, da?

Madeleine, i am excited, a character in a children's novel inspired by my butterfly?!!! wow, i am humbled! :-) i can't wait to find out more about that. and thank you for vibrating together with my dark spring, how beautifully you put it: "the extravagant beauty of spring to display the darkness of the human heart", i loved that!
    je t'embrasse comme d'habitude...

  14. thank you, Dan, i am glad you returned! :-)

Elena, welcome on the Bridge, i thank you for your warm words...

ah Manu, what a wonderful line you wrote, a relief, isn't it, the right word... i am glad you approve of it too, perhaps like this we can find some consolation in this never-ending, sullen spring :-)

yes Lynne, how true this is - and yet how often we forget it, too...

anon, do you love what? or whom? i am used to a more articulate language, i am afraid :-P

    Prospero,
i am overwhelmed... i am so happy to see you redundant (does it sound silly? :-)
i don't know what to say, really. can silence be redundant too?

  16. "running in circles
cutting the air with pale little arms"

    That touches me so.

I may not quite understand all you are saying and revealing, but it doesn't bother me. I like the mysterious open-ended nature. It's more of a process, like an unfolding, rather than a closed statement about the nature of reality.

  17. your springs are definitely more broodingly richer than mine! harsh, fierce, sullen, ...

  18. coucou...

  19. Exquisite, Roxana. I so love white flowers, and one reason is because they make me wistful, sad...but in a soothing kind of way.
